Hi.
I am slated to have arthroscopic surgery on my knee in a few weeks and I am really freaking out.
The main problem is that I live in Canada and at the age of 48, have had 2 serious knee injuries to the same knee, but with x-rays it shows I need 2 new knee replacements.
The injured knee has completely devastated my life in many ways. The surgeon says he will not do a knee replacement on a 48 year old person…you have to be 65, as they say the replacements wear out.
So he isn’t sure if I have a meniscus tear (I have been waiting for surgery for 8 months and am still in pain and immobility every day even with therapy, cortisone etc.)
He said he would see if there is a tear he would repair it and also he would "clean up" the arthritis as much as he can.
He made it seem like it was no big deal at all and didn’t even talk to me about it…just said it was day surgery and that was that.
When I went onto the internet to research that kind of surgery…ALL I found was scary experiences and people saying how much worse they were, and it took 6 months to heal and it was horrible and they needed crutches and on and on and it now felt like they were walking bone on bone.
Even though I live with pain even day and am not able to do things like walk very long (that is devastating! and so on)… I have improved since the accident and I am extremely scared I will backslide into making this worse….yet if I have a meniscus tear or if the cleaning up helps…then that would be worth it.
He gave it a 50/50 chance I would feel better.
In my area it will take 2 years before I could get an MRI to see about the tear.
I need to know your opinion about this kind of surgery if you have any experience…please. The date is quickly approaching and this is the first time I’ve been so unsure about needing surgery before.

Going over a jump, missing the landing and smashing my knees…
I used to run and bike competetively. I had to stop training for almost 3 months after the injury. I was advised not to have a meniscectomy by a surgeon. I was told by a cycling friend to start very slow by 5 minutes rides daily every second day and increase only by 5 minutes every week. Is this realy necessary? It seems to me to be too slow for someone who used to go for two or three hours rides. Any good advise from someone with knowledge in cycling medicine or similar experience?

My mother fell on the escalator due to mechanical problems of the unit she was on. Th e fail safe did not kicked in and hence she fell and rolled down the steps. She got bruises on her arms, shoulder, knee and sore left ankle. She hit her head on the way down too.

Last year I hyper extended my knee in soccer and the pain only lasted for 10 minutes but in the rest of the games of the year it was sore again and caused a limp for a while after the game. How do I prevent it? or if it happens again what should I do after wards?
I play sports consecutively almost everyday. I hurt my knee one day but I ignored it and played even more sports. Just some days ago I felt my knee collapsed on me. It was hard for me to walk and I felt that my knee was loose. The next day it felt good but with the same irritating pain. Now, I’m taking a rest for about a week because I have a big football game coming up. My knee doesn’t really hurt that bad. I just have this irritating pain at the back-right side of my right knee. How long would it take for a knee injury to fully heal?
